About Colorado State Senate
District 20

State Senate District 20 lies in the largely suburban area in the western part of the Denver Metro area. District 20 encompasses all of Wheat Ridge, Golden and almost all of Edgewater. The northern part of Lakewood and Southern part of Arvada also fall inside District 20.

Our district is not only a beautiful place to live, work and raise a family but has a rich history as well. Here are some interesting facts about this important part of Jefferson County.

  • Wheat Ridge became the largest producer of carnations in the world until the mid-20th century. (Thus, the aptly named Wheat Ridge Carnation Festival!)
  • “Golden City” was Denver’s biggest rival to become the capital of Colorado in the mid nineteenth century. Before Colorado became a state, the territorial legislature held sessions in what is now The Old Capitol Grill.
  • Arvada was the first place in Colorado where gold was found! On June 22, 1850, Lewis Ralston discovered gold in the creek that now bears his name.
  • Edgewater had a truly original beginning. In 1861 a farmer named Thomas Sloan unearthed an underground spring while digging a well on his farm. The spring flooded 200 acres, becoming, of course, Sloan’s Lake. The area west of this new lake became known as Edgewater.
  • Lakewood is the home of Davies Chuck Wagon Diner. The 17 foot tall cowboy on Colfax has been there since 1957. It is believed to be only diner of this type/era still operating in Colorado. Davies was also the first holder of a Colonel Sanders Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise in Colorado. Davies is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
